Safe Kids of Central Wyoming

Unintentional injury is the number one cause of death in children ages 1 to 18 in Wyoming. Every year, one out of every four children needs medical attention for an accidental injury. Falls remain the leading cause of hospitalizations in children and youth less than age 19, followed by motor vehicle crashes and poisonings.

Safe Kids of Central Wyoming (SKCW) provides injury prevention education and safety devices to parents for their children. As a member of Safe Kids USA, Safe Kids of Central Wyoming is a part of a nationwide network of organizations working to prevent unintentional childhood injury. The program focuses on a variety of issues, including:

  • Car safety
  • Fall prevention
  • Fire safety
  • Home safety
  • Water safety
  • Pedestrian and bicycle safety
  • Poison Prevention

By focusing on the above issues of childhood safety, Safe Kids strives to accomplish the following tasks:

  • Teach families about child injury risks and prevention
  • Evaluate solutions for injury risks
  • Work to pass and improve child safety laws and regulations
  • Provide lifesaving devices such as child safety seats, helmets and smoke alarms to families who need them
  • Promote corporate leadership in child safety through effective and sustainable partnerships

Safe Kids of Central Wyoming is dedicated to preventing avoidable childhood injuries and death in our community. Our child passenger safety program is only one of the ways we strive to do this. We also focus on fall prevention, fire safety, home safety and water safety.

A generous gift of any amount will go a long way to save a child’s life.

  • $25 can provide car seat education and support for one family in our community.
  • $50 can provide one child with a safe and reliable car seat and educate the family about how to use it correctly every time.
  • $100 can support two child passenger safety inspection events in the community.
  • $250 can train two individuals to become certified child passenger safety technicians.

Safe Communities Region II

The power of prevention is a strong force that is used in safety methods, like promotion of injury prevention and general safety education such as teaching people about highway and traffic safety to avoid injuries from traffic accidents. The Safe Communities program educates the community on the dangers of at-risk behavior and addresses issues such as drinking and driving, seat belt and car seat usage, and texting and driving. In 2010, our Safe Communities region (Region II), composed of Converse, Natrona, Niobrara and Platte counties, accounted for 21.5 percent of the total motor vehicle crashes in Wyoming. Through its project objectives, Safe Communities strives to make an impact big enough to lower this number and keep people safe. The project goals include:

Alcohol-Related Crashes (Adults & Youth)

  • Media campaigns and working with NHTSA media coordinators

  • Change attitude and behaviors in the views of drinking
  • Offer alternatives to drinking and driving
  • Utilize every partner to combat the problem of alcohol
  • Utilize partnerships within region to disseminate media and stories focusing on August Crackdown Campaign and Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Occupant Protection/Distracted Driving (Adults & Youth)

  • Engage in a statewide effort to increase seat belt usage working with the Wyoming Seat Belt Coalition and Safe Communities partners
  • Change attitudes and behaviors regarding buckling a seat belt and not having a primary law
  • Develop media campaigns working with NHTSA Media Coordinators to raise awareness
  • Utilize partnerships in the region for May Mobilization
  • May Safe Kids Day for child passenger safety
  • Little Convincer program in kindergarten classes in Natrona County
  • Help every family understand Wyoming’s child occupant protection law

Safe Communities Region II is funded by the Wyoming Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Grant Program. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Wyoming Media Coordinators, school districts, and community colleges work together as partners on these goals.
