Throwback Thursday: National Volunteer Week, April 1987
By Kristy Bleizeffer Apr 19, 2018
This week is National Volunteer Week, and we wouldn't be Natrona County's community hospital without the work of our army of dedicated volunteers.
Just in time, we found this tie-in from the April 1987 issue of Hospital Hi-Lites, Wyoming Medical Center's monthly employee newsletter. More on that in a minute.
We were recently gifted with a pile of old Hi-Lites issues, in pristine condition, dating from October 1982 to February 1996. They are filled with irreplaceable stories about the people who helped build this hospital over the decades. You'll start seeing some of these stories pop up in our Throwback Thursday series.
The issues were donated by a former operator who worked here during their publication, and we are very thankful for the gesture!
Now, back to those volunteers from 1987. Then, 190 volunteers gave 19,000 service hours to the hospital. Elaine Hough, longtime WMC historian and director of Volunteer Services, interviewed four pink ladies for a two-page feature article: Loretta Hancock, Arlene Knock, Cecil Lutton and Connie Walters.
"When you walk into the hospital, you have a feeling it's yours - that you belong. If we didn't feel that the hospital appreciated us, I don't believe that we would be doing it," said Cecil, an ICU hostess in 1987.
You can read the full article in the scans below.
WMC volunteers are no longer called Pink Ladies, because, well, they are no longer mostly ladies. Their pink smocks have long been replaced by blue vests.
Volunteer Services is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year, and they'd love to tell you all about what they do to keep this hospital humming. They are hosting an open house tomorrow at the volunteer-run Cottage Gift Shop on the second floor of the McMurry West Tower. We hope to see you there!
