What is a health and wellness coach?
By Darci Reed Feb 21, 2017
Defining health and wellness coaching is similar to putting a square peg into a round hole.
Here is what health wellness coaches are not: Physical or fitness trainers, sport coaches, nutritionists, case managers, counselors or dictators.
Rather, a health and wellness coach is an ally, partner and person of support along a path of change. A client once described it to me this way: “I cannot put into words what we have done in the last six sessions, but I do know I feel better and am moving in the direction of a better me.” Another described coaching as “the physical therapy of life.”
Whether in a one-on-one or group setting, coaching can help you bridge the gap between recommendations from your healthcare provider, your wellness goals and life decisions.
When working with a certified health and wellness coach, your coach will gather information about where you are in each area of your life and where you want to get to. A coach will evaluate your readiness for change, because without readiness, a coach may be of little help.
Your coach will discuss with what has held you back, where you are stuck and what has worked in the past. They’ll also help develop a plan for moving forward. This leads to an ideal vision for the future. You and your coach will work on getting to this ideal vision by discussing patterns, limiting beliefs and perspectives. You will set goals and identify the steps needed to reach them. You are accountable to yourself.
In follow-up sessions, we will reassess your progress and discuss insights and setbacks while readjusting as needed. Throughout the process a coach will bring questions, new tools and observations to the table for you to consider.
