What is Cardiopulmonary Rehab?

By Mary Facciani Apr 1, 2017

Memberships to the NERD Health and Wellness Center include consultations with exercise physiologists, health and wellness coaches and other professionals to help you meet your personal health goals.

The Cardiopulmonary Program is designed to help patients return to a full and productive life with the goal of preventing a future event from reoccurring.

Cardiac Rehab and Pulmonary Rehab programs incorporate monitored exercise classes, health education and prevention, as well as support for patients, who have experienced a serious cardiac event or a chronic lung condition. These may include:

  • Heart attack
  • Coronary angioplasty
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Heart valve replacement
  • Coronary artery disease with angina
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Emphysema
  • Asthma
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Lung cancer

Both programs are designed to help patients understand their medical condition, treatment options and coping strategies.

"We work closely with patients and their physician to provide a program that offers care and support for our patients to get them back to their optimal health,” said Callie Killmer, a respiratory therapist at NERD Health and Wellness Center.

Once patients graduate the initial stage of the program, they are encouraged to join the maintenance program. Spouses are encouraged to join.

Both programs incorporate services provided by a registered nurse, respiratory therapists, and an exercise physiologist. Medicare and supplemental insurance generally covers the initial stages.
