Yvonne Wigington, chief financial officer at Wyoming Medical Center and immediate past president of the Wyoming chapter of the Healthcare Financial Managers Association was recently named the Wyoming’s American Hospital Association Grassroots Champion. Wigington was honored recently at the Wyoming Hospital Association annual meeting held in Sheridan.

Eric Boley, president of the Wyoming Hospital Association, presents WMC CFO Yvonne Wigington with the grassroots champion award at the Wyoming Hospital Association conference in September in Sheridan.

“I’m really proud of what we’ve accomplished this year, and am honored to be this year’s grassroots champion,” said Wigington. “Thank you to the Wyoming Hospital Association, Wyoming chapter of HFMA, Vickie Diamond and Mary Lynne Shickich for the great support.”

Each year, the WHA recognizes one individual who goes above and beyond in grassroots advocacy. Wigington always actively works with legislators, but as president of the Wyoming chapter of HFMA, she has taken it to another level, convening legislative panels at chapter meetings and encouraging HFMA members to speak directly with legislators regarding issues their facilities are facing.

Getting real-life examples and presenting them to legislators makes a huge difference. Showing the effects of legislative decisions from a grassroots level and explaining what those decisions will do or have done to individual communities carries a lot of weight.

In her capacity as CFO at Wyoming Medical Center, Wigington has actively worked with Natrona County legislators. Several meetings were held during the year, including a breakfast meeting right before the legislative session began. At the breakfast, Wigington explained the financial situation of WMC and talked about specific impacts legislative actions have had or could have during the upcoming session. Her efforts were crucial in helping get the private hospital upper payment limit program passed.

Wigington embodies what a grassroots champion is and is a worthy recipient of this honor. A full list of honorees across the country can be found here.
