Volunteers give our Caring Closet a makeover
By NJ Olsen Mar 24, 2017
From time to time, we all need a makeover. Sometimes special projects fall into that category.
Wyoming Medical Center volunteers gave such a makeover to the Caring Closet, a program providing clothing to patients who may arrive by ambulance, helicopter or other means who are in need of clothing upon discharge.
Volunteers felt that all patients in need should be discharged with a brand new set of clothing rather than the donated items the closet previously depended on. They cleaned out the old closet and designated $1,000 a year to purchase new clothing in a variety of sizes. They also donated undergarments to the Emergency Department for assault victims.
Volunteers check inventory weekly and case managers can access the closet and provide items when they identify a patient in need. Additionally, a group of six volunteers put together kits containing shampoo, lotion, tooth brushes and other items a patient may need when discharged.
News spread quickly of the Caring Closet makeover, and the need was far greater than anticipated. WMC Volunteers partnered with six local churches who donated money to increase the scope of the distributions.Volunteers also held a bake sale and other events to help fund the growing project. In the past nine months alone, the Caring Closet supplied garments to 75 men and 63 women.
We will be raising more money for the closet during the solar eclipse this summer. On Aug. 21, volunteers will host an eclipse viewing party on the third floor of the West Tower Parking Garage. It will include live entertainment, food vendors, kids’ activities and much more.
Tickets go on sale on April 15. Cost is $10 and includes viewing glasses, a map, drink ticket and access to all Eclipse Festival events including a concert by Steve Frame and the Western Rebels. Money raised will go to the Caring Closet and the Wish List Project.
